MSFHR at a Glance

About Us

  • The Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR), funded by the government of British Columbia, is our province’s health research support agency.
  • MSFHR’s mandate is to strengthen BC’s health research enterprise – which in turn improves the health of British Columbians, their health system and their economy.
  • Our programs:
    • Fund individuals:  our awards support health researchers across the spectrum, from trainees to those with well-established careers
    • Fund teams:  our awards support health researchers to work collaboratively
    • Fund research:   we provide grants for projects that address health system priorities
    • Mobilize the community:  we bring together BC’s universities, health authorities, non-profit organizations and government for health research planning and action
  • MSFHR is dedicated to the memory of Nobel Prize recipient Dr. Michael Smith, a pre-eminent BC scientist with a long-standing commitment to support for researchers throughout their careers.

Strategic Direction

Our 2009 strategic plan development process had five phases: environmental scanning, staff engagement, Board engagement, stakeholder consultations, and finalization.  The first three phases resulted in a draft strategic framework document.

From April to June, we met with stakeholders across sectors and the province to discuss what we proposed and gathered more feedback through an online survey on this site. Your feedback enabled us to provide our Board with a revised document in July 2009 – moving from a strategic framework to strategic direction.
