Funding to BC institutions

A key priority for the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research is to create a vibrant and sustainable health research environment that is recognized for excellence, is responsive to BC's health needs, and contributes to building BC's economy. The Institutional Infrastructure Program provides funding to eight major health research institutions in BC.

Funding to the institutions commenced in July 2003 and was completed September 2009:

  • BC Cancer Agency, Provincial Health Services Authority ($3.2 million)
  • Children’s & Women’s Health Centre of BC, Provincial Health Services Authority ($1.8 million)
  • St. Paul’s Hospital/Providence Health Care, Vancouver Coastal Health ($1.6 million)
  • Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, Vancouver Coastal Health ($2.6 million)
  • Simon Fraser University ($1.2 million)
  • University of British Columbia ($2.2 million)
  • University of Northern British Columbia ($1.1 million)
  • University of Victoria ($1.4 million)

Funding amounts for each institution were determined based on factors including the magnitude and excellence of existing and planned health research as outlined in a four-year research development plan. Plans were developed in consultation with MSFHR and assessed by an external Merit Review Panel.

Review of Infrastructure Programs

In November 2006, MSFHR initiated an external review of its Infrastructure Programs, including the Institutional, Research Unit, Team and Networking Award programs. The Review Panel delivered its final report, including 14 recommendations, in December 2006. The report was formally received by the MSFHR Board of Directors on February 16, 2007.
