Sima Zakani

Dr. Sima Zakani is a program manager and lead engineer in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia (UBC). In 2018, she joined the Digital Lab—an integrated unit within BC Children’s Hospital and UBC—where she is managing the 3D Printing Program used as part of clinical care workflows and patient/physician education.

A mechanical engineer specializing in orthopaedic biomechanics, Dr. Zakani graduated from Queen’s University where she used computer-assisted technologies to investigate the biomechanics of hip and shoulder joints. Her post-doctoral fellowship at UBC’s Centre for Hip Health and Mobility focused on investigating the biomechanics of hip joint in patients with femoroacetabular impingement (a deformity of the hip bones), studying the relationship between these deformities and the development of arthritis using UBC’s upright open MRI scanner. She also partnered with the Orthopaedic Division at the BC Children’s Hospital to introduce intra-operative navigation technologies for hip surgeries.
