Introduction
Nursing Research Advisory Council
Current activities
The BC Ministry of Health has provided $8 million to MSFHR for a BC Nursing Research Initiative (BCNRI). The initiative, with direction from a Nursing Research Advisory Council (NRAC) will support practice-relevant health services research related to the nursing workforce and associated policy initiatives. In September 2008, the MSFHR Board of Directors approved recommendations developed through provincial consultations on nursing health services research priorities and strategies for capacity building.
BCNRI Vision, Mandate, Goals & Prinicples
Working with the Ministry of Health’s Nursing Directorate, MSFHR developed terms of reference for a Nursing Research Advisory Council (NRAC) to provide direction for BCNRI. The Council is co-chaired by Dr. Lynn Stevenson, Vice President, People, Organizational Development, Practice and Chief Nurse Executive at Vancouver Island Health Authority and Dr. Pamela Ratner, MSFHR Senior Scholar and Professor, UBC School of Nursing.

Two programs have been launched by the initiative:
Four additional programs have been endorsed for development:
1. Commissioned Research:
This program strategically addresses an important issue within one of the BCNRI research priority areas by commissioning research that is provincial in scope, of high priority to decision-makers, and provides evidence to inform decisions in the BC health system.
2. Partnership Research:
This program supports applications to peer-reviewed national and international team or research operating grant competitions that require matching funding and meet the BCNRI goals and build collaborative links among academia, nurses and the broad health services practice and policy communities.
3. Research Projects:
This program will provide funds to cover the direct operating costs of conducting relevant high quality health services and policy research projects in BCNRI research priority areas. The nature of the projects may be research synthesis, research demonstration, pilot/seed research, or research knowledge exchange.
4. Investigative Teams:
This program is designed to build capacity for and support practice-relevant health services research in priority areas to inform the role of nurses within the broad health services practice community. Teams will consist of researchers, nursing practitioners and decision-makers working in partnership to ensure priority questions are identified and research outcomes disseminated.
Announcements regarding the launch of these programs will be made in early 2010.
