Inquiries and Further Information
Establishment Grants are supplemental to the host organization's commitment to provide appropriate start-up funds and infrastructure support for the researchers. Only expenses directly related to the Career Investigator's research proposal/program of research will be reimbursed.
Eligible Expenses
- Stipends of students, postdoctoral fellows, research assistants and personnel directly involved in the research activities of the award recipient.
Non-Eligible Expenses
- Salary of secretarial and clerical staff
Eligible Expenses
- Purchase of scientific materials/supplies and other expendables
- Minor equipment costing less than $10,000 per unit or set up
- Major equipment costing more than $10,000 per unit or set up
- Equipment rental
- Animals and animal facilities
- Computers, modems, and other hardware and software required for the research (the policies of the host institution with respect to ownership of equipment will apply to equipment bought with these funds)
- Cellular phones (long distance or local charges) and personal digital assistants (PDAs) (e.g. Blackberry, Palm Pilot, Pocket PC) are eligible only if they are necessary for data collection
- Monthly charges for the use of the Internet from the institution or home only for the purpose of research and not normally provided by the host organization
Non-Eligible Expenses
- Standard monthly connection or rental costs of telephones
- Connection or installation of lines (telephone or other links)
- Voice mail
- Office furniture
- Library acquisitions, computer and other information services provided all members of an institution
- Cellular phone or personal digital assistants (PDAs) (e.g. Blackberry, Palm Pilot, Pocket PC) rental or purchase, including service plans, long distance or local charges
- Monthly charges for the use of the Internet from the host institution or the home
- Extended warranty for equipment
- Brokerage and customs charges for the importation of equipment and supplies
- Maintenance and insurance costs of equipment, research vehicles

Eligible Expenses
- Meals and accommodation and reasonable out-of-pocket expenses for field work, meetings, and research conferences/presentations
- Air travel at the lowest rate available, not to exceed full economy fare
- Travel cancellation insurance
- Safety-related expenses for field work, such as protective gear, immunization, etc.
- Entry visa fee when required for the purpose of the trip
Non-Eligible Expenses
- Commuting costs between the residence and host institution or research location
- Monthly parking fees for vehicles
- Passport and immigration fees
- Reimbursement for airfare purchased with personal frequent flyer points programs
- Hospitality and entertainment expenses including gifts
Eligible Expenses
- Books or periodicals, specialized office supplies, computing equipment and information services not normally provided by the host organization
- Membership in professional associations or scientific societies if necessary and have direct economic benefits to the research project/program of research
- Preparation of research manuscript and publication of research results
- Developing web-based information, included web site maintenance fees directly relating to research
- Costs associated with the dissemination of findings, i.e. through traditional venues as well as videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs, translation costs, etc.
Non-Eligible Expenses
- Moving costs
- Medical insurance
- Insurance costs for a building or a car
- Renovation, insurance and maintenance of laboratory
- Patenting expenses
- Costs involved in the preparation of teaching materials
- Costs of basic services such as heat, light, water, compressed air, distilled water, vacuums, and janitorial services supplied to all laboratories in a research facility
