A key priority for the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research is to enhance researchers' productivity and competitiveness for national and international funding through its Research Infrastructure Support Program. Funding in this area is allocated across three program components: Research Unit Infrastructure, Networking Infrastructure, and Institutional Infrastructure.

Networking Infrastructure Program
The Networking Infrastructure Program links researchers and research resources, building critical mass across health research applications, institutions, organizations and regions. The aim is to build capacity, facilitate and enhance BC's ability to address health issues, and align health research in the province with national and international research and funding priorities to improve competitiveness for external funding.

Phase I of the program, which began in January 2004, focuses on networks of researchers who share a common interest in the health of specific populations within the BC community. See the Health of Population Networks page for more information about the eight health of population networks that have been established.

Phase II of the program, which was launched in January 2006, focuses on the establishment of cross-cutting technology and methodology platforms that will enhance health research across BC. A three-stage process is currently underway to identify the first platforms that will begin implementation later this year. See the Technology/Methodology Platforms page for more information about the new platforms initiative.

Networking Infrastructure Program Guidelines
Following an initial review of the Networking Program in mid 2006, revised Networking Infrastructure guidelines were developed to address several specific operational issues. MSFHR is committed to continuous learning and improvement and will continue to amend guidelines from time to time.
