MSFHR's Trainee Partnership Program provides an opportunity for not-for-profit organizations, foundations, and other interested groups to jointly fund BC health research trainee awards in their respective areas of interest. These partnerships expand the opportunities for more BC trainees to be supported in preparing for careers as independent health researchers.

The BC Cancer Foundation (BCCF) supports research and care through the BC Cancer Agency. The BC Cancer Agency (BCCA) provides a cancer care program for the people of British Columbia, including prevention, screening and early detection, diagnosis and treatment services, support programs, community programs, research and education.

The MSFHR/BCCF Trainee Awards will be awarded to applicants training under the supervision of researchers located at the BCCA Vancouver Centre or the BCCA Research Centre and who qualify for funding at the Junior or Senior Graduate Studentship levels or the Post Doctoral Fellowship level.

BC Epilepsy Society
As a provincial, not-for-profit organization, the mission of BC Epilepsy Society (BCES) is to empower, educate, and support British Columbians living with epilepsy and their families, and fund research to find a cure. BCES pursues this mission through a variety of programs and services.

The MSFHR/BCES Trainee Award will fund a trainee in epilepsy research who qualifies for funding at the Junior or Senior Graduate Studentship level.

BC Medical Services Foundation (*Partner since 2002)
Administered through the Vancouver Foundation, the BC Medical Services Foundation (BCMSF) supports health related research, in both academic and community settings, which will have a direct impact on health and health care in British Columbia. It encourages interdisciplinary and collaborative research, actively promotes the increase of research capacity, explores solutions to health care issues and advances study in the health sciences. BCMSF has a particular interest in rural and remote health issues.

The MSFHR/BCMSF Trainee Awards will support Masters and PhD level applicants in population health research. Since 2002, 17 Masters and 29 PhD students have qualified for MSFHR / BCMSF Trainee Awards, and MSFHR recognizes BCMSF for their on-going support.

BC Sports Medicine Research Foundation
The BC Sports Medicine Research Foundation (BCSMRI) was created to promote research and increase knowledge in the field of sport and exercise medicine. The awareness and funds raised foster research in the field of sports medicine and exercise science.

Through the MSFHR Trainee Partnership Program, BCSMRI will co-fund applicants training under the supervision of experienced clinicians and scientists located at Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre and who qualify for funding at the Junior or Senior Graduate Studentship levels.

Canadian Cancer Society - BC & Yukon Division
As a national, not-for-profit organization, the mission of the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer. The Canadian Cancer Society achieves its mission through five ends: the incidence of preventable cancers in Canadians steadily decreases, Canadians have the best possible cancer control system in the world, the results of research along the cancer continuum, from prevention to end of life are used to benefit Canadians, Canadians have timely, reliable, relevant and understandable cancer control information to reduce the burden of cancer, there is enhanced quality of life for people living with cancer, and Canadians living with cancer have timely access to appropriate support services to enhance their quality of life.

The MSFHR/CCS Trainee Award will support a Post-Doctoral level trainee in cancer research in the areas of prevention, complementary therapies, knowledge transfer or palliation/end of life issues.

Child & Family Research Institute
The Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI), formerly the BC Research Institute for Children’s & Women’s Health, is dedicated to world-class research spanning a wide range of children’s and women’s health concerns. The Institute works in close partnership with the University of British Columbia, the Children’s & Women’s Health Centre of British Columbia, and the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The MSFHR/CFRI Trainee Awards will be granted to trainees who qualify for funding at the Senior Graduate Studentship or Post Doctoral Fellowship levels who are pursuing a research career in any health related research area that has direct relevance to the health of children, adolescents and women. Trainees selected for this partnered award must be training under the supervision of a researcher who is a member of the Child & Family Research Institute.

Down Syndrome Research Foundation
The Down Syndrome Research Foundation (DSRF) has a mandate to empower people with Down syndrome to achieve their potential, lead independent and fulfilled lives, and participate fully in the communities in which they live. The DSRF conducts basic and applied research on developmental disabilities with a focus on Down syndrome.

The MSFHR/DSRF Trainee Awards will fund applicants at Junior or Senior Graduate Studentship or Post Doctoral Fellowship levels researching: (i) Down syndrome and disabilities showing similar delays in cognitive, language, motor, and social/emotional development, or (ii) cognitive and behavioral development defined broadly to include molecular studies, studies of perceptual, cognitive, and social/emotional behavior, functional brain imaging, and quality of life issues.

Genome BC
Genome British Columbia is a research organization that invests in and manages large-scale genomics and proteomics research projects and science and technology platforms focused on areas of strategic importance such as human health, forestry, fisheries, ethics, agriculture and the environment. By working collaboratively with all levels of government, universities and industry, Genome BC is the catalyst for a vibrant, genomics-driven life sciences cluster with far reaching social and economic benefits for the province and Canada.

The MSFHR/Genome BC Trainee Awards will fund trainees in health-related genomics research who qualify for funding at the Junior or Senior Graduate Studentship levels or the Post-Doctoral Fellowship level.

Lotte & John Hecht Memorial Foundation
The Lotte & John Hecht Memorial Foundation has two major objectives:

  • investigation and support of complementary and alternative medicine, particularly in the treatment of cancer, and;
  • economic education that promotes the principles of a free market.
The Foundation also supplies support to organizations that help people who fall through the social safety net of government programs for the needy. Most of these groups operate around the area of Main and Hastings in Vancouver and care for that very needy population. Some support is also given to existing charitable organizations that come to the Board's attention.

The MSFHR/Hecht Trainee Awards will fund trainees researching complementary and alternative cancer treatment, and who qualify for funding at the Post Doctoral Fellowship or Senior Graduate Studentship levels.

Pacific Parkinsons Research Institute
The Pacific Parkinsons Research Institute (PPRI) is a registered charity that exists for the sole purpose of raising funds for research into Parkinson's Disease. It is committed to discovering the causes of, and the cure for Parkinson's, building an environment that attracts, supports and retains world class scientists and clinicians, and advancing research that results in an improved quality of life for people with Parkinson's and their families.

The MSFHR/PPRI Trainee Awards will fund applicants training under the supervision of researchers located at the Pacific Parkinson's Research Centre and who qualify for funding at the Junior or Senior Graduate Studentship levels.

Provincial Health Services Authority
The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) is one of six BC health authorities, whose primary role is to ensure that BC residents have access to a coordinated network of high-quality specialized health care services. The first organization of its kind in the country, the PHSA has a mandate to use their unique expertise and provincial role to work in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Services and the regional health authorities to improve the health of the population through system wide improvements.

The MSFHR/PHSA Trainee Award will be granted to a trainee who qualifies for funding at the Post Doctoral Fellowship level, who is pursuing a research career in the area of health services delivery research that has direct relevance to the mandate of the PHSA. The successful applicant will be training under the supervision of a researcher who is affiliated with one of the PHSA’s provincial agencies: BC Cancer Agency, BC Centre for Disease Control, BC Children’s Hospital and Sunny Hill Centre for Children, BC Provincial Renal Agency, BC Transplant Society, BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre, Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission, PHSA Cardiac Services and Riverview Hospital.

Rick Hansen Foundation
The Rick Hansen Foundation is a registered charitable organization founded by Rick Hansen in 1988. An international leader in the field of spinal cord injury, the Foundation brings together diverse communities comprised of researchers, service providers, and people with spinal cord injury (SCI) to accelerate improvements to the quality of life of people with SCI. To date, the Foundation has made an impact on the field of $158 million.

The MSFHR/RHMIMF Awards will fund applicants training under the supervision of a researcher who is affiliated with the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD).

St. Paul's Hospital Foundation
St. Paul's Hospital Foundation is a registered charity that raises funds for medical equipment, research and enhanced patient care at St. Paul's Hospital. St. Paul's Hospital, a major teaching hospital located in downtown Vancouver, is part of Providence Health Care. Some of the specialized health care services provided at St. Paul's are heart, kidney and HIV/AIDS, emergency, surgery, critical care (ICU) gastro-intestinal, diabetes, psychiatry, eating disorders, maternity and palliative care. Many of these serve patients from across the province.

The MSFHR/SPHF Trainee Awards will fund applicants at the Post-Doctoral Fellowship level training under the supervision of researchers located at St. Paul's Hospital.

VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation (*Partner since 2003)
The Vancouver General Hospital & University of British Columbia Hospital Foundation (VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation) is a registered charity established to raise funds for VGH, UBC Hospital and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute. Over the past 24 years, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation has raised over $163 million, providing critical support for British Columbia's leading adult acute care facility.

The MSFHR/VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation Trainee Awards will fund trainees pursuing cancer research at VGH or UBC Hospital, and who qualify for funding at the Junior or Senior Graduate Studentship levels or the Post-Doctoral Fellowship level. Since 2003, 5 Junior Graduate level students and 4 Postdoctoral fellows have qualified for joint MSFHR/VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation Trainee Awards, and we acknowledge the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation for their on-going support.

WorkSafeBC (Workers' Compensation Board of B.C.)
(*Partner since 2004)

The mission of WorkSafeBC’s Research Secretariat is to support scientific research and knowledge transfer that will contribute to improving health and safety in B.C. workplaces, fostering successful rehabilitation and return to work of injured workers, and ensuring fair compensation for workers who suffer an injury or illness on the job.

The MSFHR/WorkSafeBC Trainee Awards will fund trainees pursuing research related to the Research Secretariat's mission, and who qualify for funding at the Junior or Senior Graduate Studentship levels or the Post-Doctoral Fellowship level. In 2004, WorkSafeBC partnered with MSFHR to jointly fund a trainee at the Junior Graduate Studentship level and a trainee at the Post-Doctoral Fellowship level, and we welcome their support once again.
