Cheryl Duzenli

As a medical physicist, Dr. Cheryl Duzenli studies the interactions of radiation with biological tissues and organs in order to optimize treatments for patients undergoing radiation therapy for cancer. Approximately 50 percent of cancer patients receive radiation as part of their treatment, and approximately 10,000 patients in British Columbia benefit from radiation therapy every year. Dr. Duzenli’s recent research is focused on how carbon fibre materials can be used in medical devices to reduce treatment side effects and improve the quality of life for patients. She is currently assessing the clinical benefits of a novel carbon fibre device designed and built at BC Cancer for breast cancer radiotherapy. This device supports the breast to reduce dose to lung, heart and skin while improving the accuracy of the delivered treatment to the breast.

Dr. Duzenli has been the medical physics department head at BC Cancer, Vancouver since 2004; is co-director of the Graduate Program in Medical Physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy; and clinical associate professor in Radiation Oncology at UBC. She is currently the president of the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine.
