Daniele Agostinelli

Dr. Daniele Agostinelli is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, where he develops mathematical models to study the mechanics of cells during some biological processes, such as endocytosis and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition.

Daniele obtained his PhD in Mathematical Analysis Modelling and Applications from SISSA (Trieste), where he studied two types of biological motility: peristaltic crawling — a locomotion strategy exploited by organisms ranging from earthworms to the unicellular alga Euglena — and circumnutations — oscillatory movements exhibited by elongating plant organs such as shoots and roots. The Italian Association of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (AIMETA) has awarded his doctoral thesis as the best PhD thesis in the field of materials in 2021.
