Danya Fast

Dr. Danya Fast is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia and an associate member of UBC’s Department of Anthropology. She is a research scientist at the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use, where she co-leads the Youth Health Research Program.

Danya’s research in Vancouver, Canada and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania has broadly focused on understanding the relationship between health and place among young people who use drugs in the margins of the city. Her current research, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, SickKids Foundation and Vancouver Foundation, is focused on tracing the substance use treatment and care trajectories of young people in Greater Vancouver, as these youth navigate multiple systems of supervision and successive waves of public health emergency. Danya’s research employs anthropological, qualitative and community-based participatory action research methods, and is undertaken in close partnership with Directions Youth Services and a Youth Advisory Committee.
