Dr. Mari L. DeMarco is a clinical chemist based at St Paul’s Hospital, where she is creating new biofluid diagnostic tests and technologies to help in the diagnosis, management and treatment of disease.
Merging training in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and medicine, DeMarco’s research platform aims to directly impact patient care by innovating prognostic and diagnostic biofluid testing. This effort focuses on protein-based targets to advance health care diagnostics for timely diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia and Lewy body dementia. The research extends beyond the creation of new tests to examining their utility for patients and health care providers, and overcoming barriers to implementation in the health care system.
DeMarco is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians in laboratory medicine, and regularly leads knowledge translation activities, workshops and conferences for various professional organizations and provides mentorship to students, residents and fellows.
