Numaira Obaid

Dr. Numaira Obaid is a postdoctoral research fellow in the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering at Simon Fraser University. She completed her PhD at the University of Toronto, where she researched the mechanical behavior of multi-constituent composites.

Numaira was interested in applying her knowledge to investigate the biomechanics of the human body. In 2019, she started her postdoctoral research with Dr. Carolyn Sparrey at Simon Fraser University, where she investigated spinal cord injury (SCI) biomechanics in a non-human primate (NHP) cervical contusion model. Her research incorporates intersubject variability into computational SCI models, with the goal of improving consistency in pre-clinical animal models of SCI.

Numaira is interested in improving the lives of older adults by understanding how geriatric falls result in spinal cord injuries, and how they can be prevented.

In 2021, she was awarded with an MSFHR Research Trainee award, which will allow her to study spinal cord injury biomechanics in older adults with age-related spinal degeneration.
