Ryan Hoiland

Dr. Hoiland is an assistant professor in the UBC Department of Medicine. He obtained his PhD at the University of British Columbia Okanagan (2015-2018), for which he was awarded the Governor General’s Gold Medal. Thereafter, he completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia (2018-2023), funded through a Mitacs Elevate Fellowship (2018/2019), Michael Smith Health Research BC Research Trainee Program fellowship (2020-2023), and Craig H. Neilsen Foundation postdoctoral fellowship (2021-2023).

Dr. Hoiland’s research interests center on developing new clinical tools and therapies for the management and treatment of acute central nervous system injury. His laboratory investigates the mechanisms by which low oxygen levels in the brain contribute to neurologic injury and how optimization of tissue oxygen levels can be leveraged as a therapeutic strategy to mitigate the severity of brain injury. This work spans the continuum of translational medicine, including experimental disease modelling, human physiology experiments, and patient focused research.
