Sean R Locke

Dr. Sean R Locke is an MSFHR and Canadian Diabetes Association Postdoctoral Fellow at UBC Okanagan, and is supervised Dr. Mary Jung. He completed his doctorate at the University of Saskatchewan under the supervision of Canada Research Chair Dr. Larry Brawley.

Locke’s primary role is to coordinate a community-based initiative to help individuals diagnosed with prediabetes make lifestyle changes to reduce their risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes. His doctoral training in self-regulatory skills interventions and expertise in cognitive biases are being applied to enhance the lifestyle program’s efficacy and fidelity.

Locke’s research program is two-pronged: the first examines psychological mechanisms, like cognitive biases, in understanding non-adherence to lifestyle behaviours (the better we understand the mechanisms of non-adherence, the more capable we are of targeting and intervening upon them); the second investigates lifestyle interventions on reducing type 2 diabetes risk. In the fast-paced world we live in, it is crucial to effectively translate lifestyle programs that foster self-regulatory skills development into the community to maximize their impact and reach.
