Dr. Yijian Yang

Dr. Yijian Yang is a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Hip Health and Mobility, University of British Columbia. He received his PhD in 2015 from the Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology at Simon Fraser University. His research interests include injury prevention, risk assessment for falls, and physical activity promotion in older adults. His PhD research sought to understand the cause and circumstances of falls and injuries in older adults in long-term care through observational studies.

During his postdoc, Dr. Yang received one Mitacs accelerate internship award and one MSFHR Research Trainee award. He worked with BC Care Providers Association to develop an “evidence-informed guideline for recreation programs to enhance mobility of older adults in long-term care,” based on a literature review of 64 papers and a survey with 437 recreation therapy practitioners. The guideline was published in the Canadian Association for Long Term Care.

Through his MSFHR award, Dr. Yang examined the mobility patterns of older adults in assisted living. He also worked with physiotherapists to develop and evaluate a novel exercise program to enhance upper limb strength and mobility. His study demonstrated the effects of this exercise program on mobility. Currently, he is working with Fraser Health Authority to implement this program in assisted living sites.
