Yunusa Garba

Dr. Yunusa M. Garba will pursue postdoctoral studies in the lab of Assistant Professor Benjamin Matthews in the Zoology Department at UBC. Dr. Garba’s MSFHR-funded project aims to understand adaptability in egg-laying behavior of the mosquito Aedes aegypti, which transmits deadly and debilitating viruses that cause Dengue fever, yellow fever, Zika, and Chikungunya.  He received Masters training at Kampala International University in Uganda, a Ph.D. from the Max-Planck Institute for Organismal Biology at the University of Konstanz in Germany, and is a lecturer at the College of Medical Sciences at Gombe State University in Nigeria. He has studied the neurobiology of odor guided behavior in insects and will now apply his expertise to mosquitoes and other vectors of diseases with health impacts across the world. 

Dr. Garba is a leader and community builder in TReND in Africa, a UK-based organization dedicated to developing research capacity and training in the Natural Sciences across Africa. He co-organizes a yearly neuroscience course dedicated to helping African researchers develop their own research questions that will be relevant to their immediate community.
