Applications now open for 2018 Health Professional-Investigator competition

3 October 2017

Applications are now open for MSFHR's Health Professional-Investigator (HP-I) competition. Health professionals who are interested in applying can review the 2018 competition guidelines and instructions. The letter of intent deadline is November 3, 2017, with the full application due January 19, 2018.

The MSFHR HP-I Program is intended to help decrease the gap between health research and its implementation by supporting health professionals to conduct and apply research relevant to health and/or the health system in BC.

"Clinically active health professionals have an intimate understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with improving patient care, but often lack the support required to apply that knowledge in a research setting," says MSFHR Interim President & CEO, Dr. Bev Holmes.

For 2017 HP-I award recipient Dr. Robert Olson, a radiation oncologist at the BC Cancer Agency's Centre for the North, the award will allow him to explore new, advanced radiotherapy techniques in his cancer care project, which will compare Canada-wide patient-reported treatment benefits and side effects of radiotherapy for individuals with painful bone metastases.

"It's great," says Olson, "It allows me to recruit more grad students and specifically, it allows me to have students up here in northern BC." The award will also allow him to expand the scope of his project to a national level, comparing "differences between different treatments without running a big, costly randomized trial."
