Applications open for 2020 Health Professional-Investigator competition
3 January 2020
Applications are now open for MSFHR’s 2020 Health Professional-Investigator (HP-I) competition. This year, we are making changes to provide all eligible health professions an equal opportunity to obtain salary support for research.
Introducing separate physician and non-physician streams
As a data-driven organization, MSFHR closely reviews its programs to assess trends and impact, including how many people are applying and succeeding, and who they are. Our review of three years of data for our HP-I Program showed an imbalance in the type of health professionals applying to and receiving these awards, with physicians making up the largest number of program applicants and the majority of the award recipients. We are taking steps to address this imbalance and provide all eligible health professions an equal opportunity to obtain salary support for research.
For the 2020 competition, we have introduced two separate applicant streams: a physician stream and a non-physician stream, each will be evaluated independently; this will create distinct pools thus allowing for a more equitable “like against like” comparison. Applicants will self-identify which stream they want to apply through. The actual number of awards allocated to each stream will be dependent upon the number of applications received and the results of peer review scoring. As with all of our competitions, all applications to the HP-I Program undergo rigorous peer review and are adjudicated based on excellence.
We hope that introducing separate streams for physician and non-physician applicants will increase the number of non-physician applicants to the program.
In addition to the separate applicant streams for the 2020 HP-I competition, we have introduced other global changes to our 2020 competitions. Read more on our website.
