Maximize use of data, says Dr. Diane Finegood in op-ed

4 June 2012

A Vancouver Sun column published June 4 by MSFHR president and CEO Dr. Diane Finegood argues that British Columbia should be prepared to take a leading role in harnessing the power of data to improve health.

Finegood suggests that BC’s repository of health data, built over three decades, represents a gold mine of information to our province’s health research community. With the aid of modern analytical technologies, these data hold the key to unlocking better treatments, improving the implementation of health care policies and programs, and tracking emerging health issues across the population. With proper privacy safeguards in place, BC can give its scientists the tools to carry on Dr. Michael Smith’s legacy of world-class health research.

Finegood will be speaking on the issue of data in health research at “The Data Effect” conference in Vancouver on June 5.
