2018 Reach competition open for applications
Applications are now open for MSFHR's 2018 Reach competition to support the dissemination and uptake of research evidence. The application deadline is May 30, 2018.
Reach awards fund teams of health researchers and research users as they collaboratively plan and implement research dissemination activities, adapting messages and mode of delivery in order to reach audiences who can directly use the information.
Each Reach award provides funding of up to $10,000 to support the development and implementation of a knowledge dissemination activity for a maximum of 12 months, to improve further research, practice and policy-making in areas that align with BC's health system priorities.
In 2017, a Reach team led by Drs. Kristin Campbell (UBC) and Ryna Levy-Milne (BC Cancer) used existing evidence on the importance of exercise for cancer patients to offer cancer-specific exercise advice via HealthLink BC.
“We know that exercise can help reduce the side effects of cancer treatment and improve quality of life for people with cancer and those post-treatment, but until recently there were very few services to help patients exercise regularly,” explains Reach team member Sarah Weller, a clinical exercise physiologist and research trainee.
Making use of the existing 8-1-1 phone service, the team created a cancer-specific exercise service where patients can speak to a qualified exercise professional with cancer-specific training for advice on how to start exercising safely, how to use exercise to manage treatment side effects, or to develop a personal physical activity plan. They have also created an exercise support page on the BC Cancer website, providing evidence-informed resources for cancer patients.
“Our Reach award allowed us to bring together a team from BC Cancer, UBC’s department of Physical Therapy, and HealthLink BC, and gave us the resources to really drive the project forward to help all those with, or recovering from cancer, safely reap the benefits of exercise.”
New for 2018, MSFHR has made some slight adjustments to the Reach award eligibility criteria. Please note that eligible dissemination events that are part of an annual series (e.g. an annual conference) may only be funded once through the Reach Program, and events, activities or tools funded by a Reach award are not eligible for additional MSFHR support, i.e., sponsorship.
