Applications open: 2019 Health System Impact Fellowship in partnership with CIHR

MSFHR is partnering with CIHR’s Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR) on its 2019 Health System Impact Fellowship to support the development of BC’s health policy research talent. The application deadline is April 2, 2019.

The CIHR Health System Impact Fellowship provides PhD trainees and post-doctoral fellows in health services or policy related fields with a paid experiential learning opportunity within health system organizations, and builds capacity for the integration of policy research into decision-making.

Offered in partnership with MSFHR, the program is a great opportunity for BC organizations to benefit from the research and analytic talents of a Health System Impact Fellow to address a specific health policy challenge. For researchers, it is an opportunity to apply their research expertise and develop their skills in a health policy environment over a one or two-year period (for doctoral and post-doctoral streams respectively) in organizations such as the BC Ministry of Health, BC Ministry of Mental Health & Addictions, and Child Health BC.

2019 Health System Impact Fellowship application information

BC had great success in the 2018 competition. MSFHR co-funding supported six Fellows, enabling a total of 13 to be placed in BC organizations to address pressing health policy issues in our province.

The six MSFHR-funded Fellows are working on policy challenges such as improving physician workforce planning for primary care, measuring the impact of current and future harm reduction strategies in the ongoing opioid overdose epidemic, and examining the dosing of antipsychotics in residential care.

BC’s 2018 Health System Impact Fellows

In 2017, MSFHR put its Health Policy Fellowship Program on hold to partner with CIHR on the new Health System Impact Fellowship. The aim was to meet the goals of the MSFHR Health Policy Fellowship while leveraging federal funds to BC to support the development of health policy research talent and the uptake of evidence to inform planning, policy, and practice.

The partnership allows MSFHR to leverage our funds to increase the number of funded researchers working with BC health authorities and the provincial government and pool resources to reduce duplication in the system while building capacity for the integration of policy research into decision-making.

The 2019 Health System Impact Fellowship competition is now open for applications. If you are a health researcher with an interest in applying their skills to a local health policy issue, or a BC health system organization with a health policy challenge, you can find further information here.
