A pan-Canadian vision and strategy for health services and policy research is set out in a new document launched March 2 by CIHR.

The document represents the culmination of a year-long collaborative process led by CIHR’s Institute of Health Services and Policy Research and involving stakeholders from across health care, as well as provincial funding organizations and health charities. The organizations share a belief that the challenges facing the health care system are best addressed through a common vision and collaborative approach.

Drawing on diverse perspectives elicited through an online survey and key informant interviews, the strategy and vision aim to inform shared priorities for the future. The goal is to establish a context against which the research community can plan, collaborate, and act to optimize investments and position Canada as a global leader in health services and policy research.

One outcome of the strategy’s development has been the establishment of a Canadian Health Services and Policy Research Alliance committed to advancing the vision, directions, and priorities outlined in the document.

The development process also saw the creation of an asset map outlining Canada’s resources for health services and policy research. As BC’s provincial health research funding agency, MSFHR contributed data to inform this asset map. MSFHR president and CEO Dr. Diane Finegood served as a lead on the project in her capacity as co-chair of the National Alliance of Provincial Health Research Organizations.
