Shannon Freeman

Dr. Freeman’s life-long passion is to promote the health and well-being of older adults and improve accessibility to healthcare in Canada. As a social gerontologist, Dr. Freeman takes a collaborative approach to research activities in the areas of aging, gerontechnology, meaningful engagement and quality of life in later life, hospice palliative care, caregiving, and longevity. Dr. Freeman employs quantitative, qualitative, and Indigenous methodologies in research partnered closely with health systems decision makers and with community leaders. Dr. Freeman is the Academic Director of UNBC’s Statistics Canada Research Data Centre and is an active member of AGEWELL – Canada’s technology and aging network. Dr. Freeman is the co-founder of the Centre for Technology Adoption for Aging in the North – CTAAN – A collaborating center for innovations in technology development and implementation to support older adults in rural and northern communities. Through CTAAN’s interlinked projects, Dr. Freeman aims to better support older persons to age in place in rural and northern communities by making technologies more available to older adults and to the healthcare system, which serves them.
